Description of Tool or App

Dragon Dictation
external image dragon-dictation-b.jpg
Dragon Dictation is not specifically designed as a World Languages app, but it does present some exciting possibilities to be used in that way. Dragon is a text-to-app service that converts spoken word into written. Those written words can then be shared via sms, email, Facebook, Twitter, or they can be copied onto the clipboard. Dragon Dictation is easy to use, you just tap one button and record. There are not many apps that allow you to actually speak another language. There are many in which you listen to, read, or write in another language. Being able to do this with this app, with a little imagination from a teacher, will make an excellent opportunity in the World Language classroom.

Benefits of Tool or App

  • Voice to text capabilities.
  • Easy to use.
  • High quality accuracy and dependability.
  • Allows text editing.
  • Available in multiple languages.
  • Allows dictations to be shared via sms, email, Facebook, or Twitter, thus reaching a larger audience.
  • For world languages, can help eliminate some of the anxiety of speaking the language.

Constraints of Tool or App

  • If you leave the app in the middle of a recording, what you have dictated will not be saved. Learned this the hard way!
  • This app will NOT work if offline. It needs to be connected to the internet to function.
  • A recording session is only a minute long. You can add to the dictation by recording again, but you might get cut off mid-sentence if not prepared.
  • There is no way to delete and start over besides manually hitting the backspace button or simply exiting out and restarting the app. Not huge, but still a minor inconvenience.

How To Use Tool or App

These are original screenshots of me recording a message in Spanish. It translates to: "This is a demonstration of how to use Dragon to practice Spanish. I love it because it helps me know if I am speaking correctly."
